Dr Nick Webb
Director and Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist

Dr Nick Webb is Director of the facility and is a children’s kidney specialist at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

He has been involved in research into new medicines for children for over fifteen years and is also Deputy Director of the Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria Medicines for Children Local Research Network.

His personal research interests lie in the development and testing of new medicines for the treatment of childhood kidney disease, including kidney transplantation and hypertension. In 2009 he was awarded an £850,000 grant by the National Institute for Health Research to lead a multi-centre trial investigating different steroid regimens for the treatment of childhood nephrotic syndrome.

Carol WoodCarol Wood
Nurse Manager

As nurse manager, Carol has over 30 years experience caring for adults and children. Carol has previously worked on the gynaecology ward, paediatric unit and children’s surgical ward at St Mary’s Hospital. She has also worked on the children’s day unit at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

Carol joined the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility Manchester in 2005 as senior research nurse and two years later became nurse manager. Carol then became nurse manager for the facility in November 2009.

According to Carol the best part of her job is working with everyone involved in research projects, which hopefully can make a difference for lots of other children in the future.

Kathryn McBrideKathryn McBride
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Kathryn qualified as a registered children's nurse in 2005, with a Diploma in Children's Nursing with advanced standing. In 2009 she gained a BSc (Hons) in Acute Child Care.

After qualifying Kathryn worked in children's oncology for three years and moved to clinical research in February 2008. In November 2009 she became a senior paediatric clinical research nurse. Kathryn is now training to be an Advanced Practitioner which will enable her to support the research team by taking responsibility for tasks which could previously only be carried out by the PI and providing onsite medical support for the WTCCRF.

Kathryn says: "Every day is different when you work with children and we laugh a lot. Also, with the new facility we are able to provide care in a truly child and family centered way which is very satisfying for the nurses and hopefully gives the children the most positive experience possible."

Jo GuestJo Guest
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Jo worked as a nursery nurse before gaining a National Diploma as a registered sick children's nurse in 1997. That same year Jo joined the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital as a staff nurse working on the paediatric surgical ward. In 2003 she was promoted to senior sister paediatric nurse.

January 2010 saw Jo become a member of our research team when she was appointed as senior paediatric clinical research nurse.

Jo loves spending time talking and playing with children, and helping them and their families.

Vicky ParkerVicky Parker
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Vicky qualified as a children's nurse in 2004 and worked for two years on a paediatric neuro-surgical ward at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. She obtained a BSc (Hons) in Acute Child Care in 2010.

Since 2006 Vicky has worked at the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility as a clinical research nurse and in 2007 she became a senior paediatric clinical research nurse.

Vicky enjoys working with children and in her current role she is able to have fun with children and their families whilst helping them.

Ruth EllicottRuth Ellicott
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Ruth has been working at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital since 2004.

She has previously worked on the respiratory and endocrine ward, high dependency unit and intensive care unit before joining the children's clinical research team in February 2010.

Ruth says that the best thing about her job is being involved in the development of new treatments for children and getting to know children and their families throughout the length of the trial.

Fiona Heap

Fiona Heap
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Fiona is a qualified registered children’s nurse, with a qualification in neonatal care.

After working for 14 years on the neonatal unit, she then went on to spend three years as a research nurse on the Wilink Genetics Unit working with children and young adults on Enzyme Replacement Therapy Clinical Trials. Following this Fiona joined the Medicine for Children’s Research Network for a further three years.

Fiona loves her job as it not only means she spends the day singing and playing alongside the children, but that she is doing something worth while.

Natalie Clulow

Natalie Plimmer
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Natalie graduated from Salford University in Nursing in 2004 and started her career in theatre at the old Royal Manchester Children’s Hosptial.

She has also spent time working in other departments including A&E and the acute assessment unit before she joined the clinical research team.

Natalie says the best thing about working on the clinical research team is looking after children and making sure that their time in hospital is as easy as possible.

Lynne AllenLynne Allen
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Lynne has been a qualified nurse for the past thirty years and has worked with both adults and children.

Throughout her career Lynne has worked in various departments including A&E, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatal Surgery and Paediatric General Medicine before joining our team.

Lynne likes getting to know the children and their families and giving them support throughout the trials. Being involved in the development of new drugs is also very rewarding.

Liz JenkinsElisabeth Jenkins
Senior Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse (Burns)

Liz qualified as a registered children’s nurse in 2003.

After qualifying Liz worked at the plastic surgery and cleft lip and palate centre for the North West, Lancashire, North Wales and Isle of Man at Booth Hall Children’s Hospital from 2004-2009 and then moved to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital along with the centre in 2009. Liz has also completed a degree module in the management of a child with Cleft lip/Palate.

Liz joined the team in November 2010 as a senior paediatric clinical research nurse specialising in burns. She is based on the burns unit and works alongside the burns and plastics consultant.

Jill Thomas

Jill Thomas
Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Jill qualified as a children’s nurse in 1992 and has just under twenty years of paediatric experience, working in both London and Sydney.

Since qualifying Jill has worked in general paediatrics, gastroenterology and metabolics.

Before joining the Wellcome Trust Research Facilitiy in 2010, Jill worked for seven years in the paediatric intensive care unit at Manchester Children’s Hospital.

For Jill, the best thing about her job is learning new skills and getting the chance to spend time with children and their families in a more relaxed setting.

Michaela TurringtonMichaela Turrington
Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Michaela has worked at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital since 2004.

During this time Michaela spent two years on a specialist endocrine and respiratory ward, followed by three and a half years on the high dependence unit.

Michaela briefly worked on the Children’s Unit at North Manchester General Hospital in 2009 before joining the Research team in November 2010.

Michaela loves having fun with the children, as well as helping them and hopefully others in the future.

Maggie Amegadzie

Maggie Amegadzie
Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Maggie qualified as a children’s nurse in 1996 and started working at the Central Manchester University Hospitals that same year.

Before joining the research team in 2010 Maggie worked on the Acorn Ward in St Mary’s Hospital for 12 years and as a link nurse for Sickle Cell and Thelassaemia for two years.

Maggie enjoys being able to see the difference the treatment can make to the lives of the children and their families.

Rachel Moon
Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

Rachel Moon

Rachel joined the research team in July 2011.

Rachel has worked at both St Mary's Hospital on the children's surgery ward and ward 76 at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital before joining the Children's Clinical Research Facility.

Being a member of staff at the facility Rachel enjoys working with both children and families involved in clinical trials and feels privileged to be working at a facility that is working to improve future health care for children.

Nicola Phillips
Healthcare Support WorkerNicola Phillips

Nicola joined the research team in November 2011. She has previously worked as a nanny and came to WTCCRF from a GP Surgery.She is a qualified nursery nurse and holds an NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care.

She enjoys working closely with the same families each week, and knowing that the medicines the facility is working with will help even more children in the future.
